Rare Posters, Signed Book and Genuine Piece of Clarice Cliff Pottery
Any collector or connoisseur of 1920s and 1930s design will be interested in this lot of collectable items on one of the most influential ceramics artists of the 20th Century.
Famous for her bright and original Art Deco designs, Clarice Cliff was born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1899 and by the late 1920s had a successful career designing innovative, colour rich pottery, with original pieces highly collectable today.
Launched at the first major London exhibition of her work at the L’Odeon Gallery in 1976, Clarice Cliff by Peter Wentworth-Sheilds (GG 1949-53) & Kay Johnson, (L'Odeon publishing), was the first book published on her life and work and is widely acknowledged to have started the major revival of interest in her pottery. The book details Cliff’s life and work and is illustrated with contemporary photos and examples of her pottery in colour. Also included are two posters advertising the exhibition at the L’Odeon Gallery, measuring 18 x 24 inches, and a genuine piece of Clarice Cliff pottery!
This lot is very kindly offered by OW Peter Wentworth-Shields. Peter was an Art Director in the motion picture business and worked on many notable productions including ‘ The Avengers’, ‘ Clockwork Orange’ and the first ‘Star Wars’. He moved to the USA in 1978 and now owns a business specializing in architectural presentations.
